Summary
Warner Bros. has officially given the green light to a sequel to its massive cinematic hit, A Minecraft Movie, confirming that Minecraft 2 is now in development. Following the original film’s near-billion dollar performance earlier this year, the continuation of the live-action video game franchise was all but inevitable.
This quick turnaround, just over two years after the first film’s release, solidifies the studio’s confidence in the franchise’s ability to anchor the competitive summer movie season. Director Jared Hess, known for his quirky and inventive style, is confirmed to return to helm the project, co-writing the screenplay alongside Chris Galletta. Hess has expressed enthusiasm for the sequel, noting the Minecraft universe is “expansive” and promises plenty of unexplored territory for the next adventure. Producers on the second film include Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson and Jason Momoa.
While casting details remain under wraps, speculation is high that Jack Black (Steve) and Momoa will reprise their roles. A teaser post from the official account, showing two pickaxes, has sparked fan speculation that the sequel will expand the focus to include the character Alex, who was teased in the first film’s end credits.
The announcement ensures that the blocky world of creativity and adventure will be returning to the big screen, much to the excitement of the game’s massive global fanbase. The sequel is officially scheduled to premiere in theaters on July 23, 2027.
