Rising Sacramento, California-based rapper Markas enters our radar with the visuals for his song “Cal Worthington.” The track title is inspired by the defunct Cal Worthington dealership commercials of the 80’s and 90’s, and Markas’ resilience spirit. Backed by a cinematic and somewhat solemn soundscape, the rapper exudes raw confidence as he effortlessly flows with lines like

I bring my brothers to the building give the feeling that we don’t give a fuck.

We just chillin watching stained glass ceilings drunk as fuck.

Risk it all been spinning on Revolt, Shyne on the JBP.

And all them guns they found at Puffs, they came from me.

What you think? I don’t pop out unless it’s love

And I don’t do it unless I want, and I ain’t doin shit for free.

This underscores his winning mentality and leadership qualities as well.

The song also comes with a brilliant conceptual video that pays homage to the defunct dealership by insinuating that the cars from that era are now in the scrap yard but his work ethic is still running on full steam.

“Cal Worthington” is taken from his EP Pray to petty god.

Inspired by his father’s music label in the 90s, and his grandfather’s nonprofit theatre program, Markas has been surrounded by the performative arts his entire life. Seeing his family run their own successful ventures in the industry was the motivation for him to take music seriously and become the lyricist he is today. Markas has a musical rap style that sounds like a hybrid of the witty lyrics of West Coast classics and the culture of storytelling that East Coast hip-hop heavyweights hold the top ranks in.
