Summary
Mark Wahlberg has teamed up with Fugees‘ Pras Michél for a documentary about his life, career and involvement in the Malaysian 1MDB scandal.
Produced under Wahlberg’s Unrealistic Ideas, Variety reports that the docu film will touch on Michél’s younger years at Yale University, his artistic legacy as the founder of the Fugees and the “personal toll” of facing a legal case that he was found guilty of. Included in the documentary is phone footage of “pivotal moments” shot by the artist himself.
“Everyone is fascinated by all the twists and turns, like it’s some kind of thriller,” he said via Variety. “But for me, this is just my life — the real, messy, complicated truth of what I’ve been living through.”
Calling Michél a “legend,” Wahlberg shared, “I’m rooting for Pras and excited to tell his story.” Unrealistic Ideas president Archie Gips added, “It’s a surprising mix of pop culture and geopolitical intrigue that feels like a spy thriller come to life.”
Crisis publicist Erica Dumas, who began working with Michél prior to the trial, will also produce. “Pras put his complete trust in Mark, Archie and Stephen [Levinson] at Unrealistic Ideas to tell his story authentically, without any filters or agenda,” she said. “This project doesn’t shy away from the challenging aspects of Pras’ recent experiences.”
In April 2023, Michél was convicted on all 10 counts of conspiracy, concealment of material facts, making false entries in records, witness tampering and serving as an unregistered agent of a foreign power. He was found to have received over $100 million USD from Malaysian billionaire Jho Low, the central figure in the 1MDB scandal, to influence US politics.
Michél is facing up to 22 years in prison, but his sentencing was delayed for the third time as US President Donald Trump considers giving him a pardon.
