Tim Westwood, former DJ on BBC Radio 1, has been accused of numerous rapes and sexual assaults.
According to the Metropolitan Police, the 68-year-old has charged with crimes against seven distinct women, some of whom were as young as 17.
Nine instances of indecent assault, two counts of sexual assault, and four acts of rape are all alleged to have occurred between 1983 and 2016. The popular Hip Hop DJ is scheduled to appear in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on November 19.
“It takes courage to come forward and report allegations of this nature,” Det. Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police Service said in a statement. “The women who have done so have put their trust in us and we continue to provide them with all available support.”
According to police, the former Radio 1 DJ is accused of indecently assaulting a 17-year-old female in the London neighborhood of Fulham in 1983.
In addition, he is charged with raping and indecently assaulting a woman between the ages of 17 and 18 in London between 1995 and 1996, as well as indecently assaulting a lady in her 20s in the Vauxhall neighbourhood of London in 1986.
Westwood is accused of raping a lady in her 20s in 2010 and raping and indecently assaulting a woman who was 17 to 18 years old between 2000 and 2001. The alleged offences are all said to have occurred in London.
He stepped down from his show on Capital Xtra in April 2022 and left Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra in 2013 after nearly 20 years.
Chief Crown Prosecutor Lionel Idan said omn Thursday the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has decided to prosecute Westwood for “a series of serious sexual offences”.
He said: “Our prosecutors have established that there is sufficient evidence to bring the case to trial and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings.
