DAOx3n steps into the scene with a stream-of-consciousness rap and energetic lilting cadence. He also employs a double-time flow which adds urgency to the track.“(E)motion” has an emo-cloud rap vibe and comprises thick 808 drums, atmospheric textures and edgy performances that fuse from off-beat melodies with fast-paced rap flows. Here, he explores the world beyond with lines like “It starts with a frequency/A wave of energy process of transmutation/Putting up.” “hellrain” has a discordant instrumentation which sounds ominous and trippy. “fr4m3w0rk” dives into the delicate topic of society exclusion, and existential crisis due to race and trauma. Backed by the dynamic and experimenatl soundscape, DAOx3n shares his experiences with insightful lines like“I hate the fact that i gotta be guarded/The life of being disregarded/Alienation for pigmentation/Became a flood of apprehension/Forced into wings of individualism.”
Thus far, DAOx3n continues to stray from the norm with the use of discordant textures, and nonconforming performance styles underpinned by relatable topics and abstract overtones. “1nterconnectedprospectiv3” dives into growth and his goals to break the mould and go against the grain. Once again, his use of abstract themes, off-kilter motifs and to some degree non-sequiturs to get his thoughts across is refreshing. The final track “yougotthisk1d” is his self-assessment and personal journal. Here he opens up about his anxiety, self-doubt and mental health. Backed by a dark and moody backdrop, he takes audiences on a journey into the dark crevices of his mind. Lines like“All the misery up in my head, keep on dreaming that someone can help me fight my demons/Cause I’m in pieces, from the trauma that’s in my dreams/So much I start violently shaking and screaming/Night terrors keep sneaking in, I wanna love me but I don’t know where to begin” underscore his trepidation but the good part is he can identify the problems and take steps to rectify it all.
Thaumaturgy is extremely experimental in all aspects. The soundscapes are nonconformist in style, his flow is far from the standard. It doesn’t abide by any musical rules and his use of layered and abstract themes brings refreshing elements to relatable topics that are cogent for the times.
