May 12, 2024 -

Today, Birmingham, Alabama-based musical Renaissance man Byron The Aquarius releases his new double single, “Just A Beat / Kitty Kat,” out now via Higher Ground. While the former embraces deep horns and electric guitar alongside a driving rhythm, the latter rides a steady tech-laced house groove into hazy hypnosis.

For ‘Just A Beat,’ what else can I say! It was a vibe. Was coming back from a Europe tour, and the layover got delayed in LA, so I was like might as well kick it with the homies. Jean-Michel Lapointe and I hit Elton John’s keyboardist’s spot with Kim Burrell in the hills. For the track, Jean and I were going through some stuff we had on our hard drive, took loops we made, and put it together like a surgery. Merged both our styles, it was legendary that’s where the name Just A Beat came from. Jean Michel is the truth, a great producer from Montreal that knows his shit, and our collaborations come together so organically, always go time with him in the studio.”
— Byron The Aquarius

A keys player by trade, Byron lends his talent to the best of the best all around the map: learning jazz and classical piano from one of the teachers (Frank E. Adams) of all-time great experimental composer Sun Ra, producing hip-hop in Detroit for Eminem-led group D12, and recording his debut album in Atlanta with Outkast/Janet Jackson’s horn players for Jeff Mills’ label Axis Records.

Byron is gifted in the art of writing melodies. He can lay down killer synth lines in seconds and then blend together his eclectic mix of sounds to create soulful, experimental, yet punchy tracks that have earned him co-signs with house music royalty like Theo Parrish and contemporary, boundary-pushing labels like Shall Not Fade.

Never pigeonholed into one genre, Byron can perform in a quartet at the London Jazz Festival and then turn around and go DJ at Defected Croatia or Movement Festival. In 2022, Byron launched his own label, Talknoi$e, inspired by the boundary-pushing sounds of Warp/Brainfeeder Records. Focused on incorporating more live instrumentation into house music, his tracks “stand out in a sea of quantized four-bar loops,” as Resident Advisor put it.
