Espace Louis Vuitton in New York City unveils a rare pairing of two major paintings by the French Impressionist Gustave Caillebotte: “Young Man at His Window” (1876) from the J. Paul Getty Museum and “Boating Party” (circa 1877-78) from the Musée d’Orsay. Presented in partnership with the Fondation Louis Vuitton, the Musée d’Orsay and the Getty, the show highlights a striking dialogue between Caillebotte’s quiet interiors and his pictorial scenes of leisure, offering two sides of a modern life in motion at the time.

Caillebotte was often seen as the introspective one among his peers and fascinated by masculinity, as per a press release by Espace Louis Vuitton. His paintings harness the tension between solitude and social life, such as a figure gazing out a Parisian window or friends drifting across the water. In both works, the artist reflects on a more intimate lens of men in the late 19th century.

The exhibition also commemorates the the 2022 acquisition of “Boating Party,” designated a French National Treasure. It’s New York appearance signals the first time the two works have been shown together. Altogether, the presentation highlights not only a footnote to Impressionism, but giving Caillebotte’s his flowers as one of the first to depict the casual and sometimes secret lives of modern men.
