Academy Award and BAFTA winner Leonardo DiCaprio is returning to the silver screen in Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest action film. One Battle After Another, an action-packed, thrilling chase film, hits theaters starting September 26. Bob Ferguson, played by DiCaprio, is a perpetually stoned, off-grid father who lives with his free-spirited daughter Willa (Chase Infiniti). When his evil nemesis, Steven Lockjaw (Sean Penn), resurfaces and his daughter goes missing, he’s forced to confront his past to save her at all costs.
Teyana Taylor, Regina Hall and Alana Haim (from the sister-led group HAIM), who previously appeared in Anderson’s nostalgic pre-teen romp Licorice Pizza (2021), co-star alongside DiCaprio to help Bob locate the whereabouts of his daughter.
The official trailer, released on March 27, shows DiCaprio in the throes of a frenetic chase to find Willa while navigating the nuances of identity and family. Critically acclaimed films, Inherent Vice (2014), The Master (2012), There Will Be Blood (2007) and Boogie Nights (1997) were heralded for their slow, intentional storytelling, so One Battle After Another marks a bold commercial detour from Anderson’s previous work. The director adapted the film from short stories he developed inspired by Vineland, ensuring that he could rework the source material through his own framework. For fans of the novel, the film will provide a unique blend of action and comedy that illuminates the story’s sentimental father-daughter dynamic.
Teyana Taylor appears in various promotional clips from the film, referencing her blockbuster-style stamina on shoot days: “Did you see how fast I was running? That wasn’t no stunt double. I feel like when it’s time for another Mission Impossible, somebody needs to call,” she jokes in one.
Produced by Oscar and BAFTA nominees Adam Somner, Sara Murphy, Anderson and executive produced by Will Weiske, the Warner Bros. Picture film will be in theaters on VistaVision, 70mm film and IMAX nationwide, out September 26 and internationally beginning September 24. Audiences are loving the film with it currently rated as a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
