Summary
Pomegranate Press is ringing in double digits and to celebrate, the indie imprint has mounted Breathless in Glowing Air, a 100-piece look back on a decade-long devotion to contemporary image-making.
With no singular theme confining the curation, the group show captures the moments that might otherwise slip through the cracks. It anchors itself in the paradoxically enduring beauty of life at its most fleeting: the touch shared between two lovers that lasts a lifetime, roadside dust kicked up into something sublime; a strip mall, kissed by a rainbow, transformed into a kind of stateside paradise.
With contributions from 62 names hailing from photography’s new vanguard – Pia Paulina Guilmoth, Juan Brenner, Adam Powell, Jerry Hsu, among the sort – each image reads as an ode to the exquisitely unresolved, characteristic of the press’s ongoing fascination with the “boundless suggestion of possibility.”
“All I can hope for is that my curatorial approach reads as honest, because genuinely, all Pomegranate has ever been is an extension of the heart,” curator and founder Jesse Feinman told Hypeart. “It’s very imperfect, incomplete, inconclusive, but I’ve yet to stop trying, which maybe is all that needs to be said.”
The Pomegranate story begins with Feinman, a then 20-year-old in Florida, driven simply by a desire to make and share zine with his close-knit network. “The simple, gentle ideas about friendship and beauty – the original catalysts for Pom – have remained mostly unchanged,” Feinman added. The one-man, now New York-based operation has kept on its limited-edition publications, adding a ton of merch and ephemera into the mix, and has since carved out a space on the global stage, though even ten years on, its punk-rooted core of accessibility and curiosity is just as intact as ever.
“All Pomegranate has ever been is an extension of the heart. It’s a seemingly never-ending love letter that just happens to exist as a platform for ideas to mutate and grow, and hopefully, come out the other end a little kinder, more evocative, less cynical.”
Breathless in Glowing Air is now on view at 1014 gallery in London through September 19. Read on for the full list of photographers on view.
