Snoop Dogg has been called out by left wing Australian senator Sarah Hanson-Young over his planned performance at the 2025 AFL Grand Final.
During an address to the senate, Hanson-Young targeted Snoop and called for him to be removed from the game’s entertainment next month.
She said: “The irony is not lost on many of us that while Izak Rankine gets dumped, Snoop Dogg gets $2 million to play his misogynistic, homophobic music on our turf.”
Hanson-Young also called Snoop a “slur merchant”.
The decision to book Snoop was defended by AFL CEO Andrew Dillon, who said: “It is also important to remember that we engaged Snoop Dogg in 2025 as the person he is today. He has spoken publicly about his past, he has changed, and today he is a grandfather, philanthropist, he helps rehabilitate youth and is a global entertainer who has performed at both the Super Bowl and the Olympic Closing Ceremony.”
Snoop recently made controversial anti-gay comments regarding inclusivity in children’s films.
Speaking on the It’s Giving podcast, Snoop voiced his opposition to a lesbian relationship appearing in the film, Lightyear.
He said: “Why my grandson in the middle of the movie like, ‘Papa Snoop, how she have a baby with a woman? She a woman.’ I didn’t come here for this shit. I just came to watch the goddamn movie.”
The rap legend continued: “So it’s like, fuck me, I’m scared to go to the movies now. Like, y’all throwing me in the middle of shit that I don’t have an answer for.
“It threw me for a loop,” Snoop said about his grandson’s curiosity. “We have to show that at this age? Like, they’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”
The same sex relationship in the film was a controversial point among conservative groups when Lightyear was released in 2022 with many right wing commentators decrying it.
The film’s star, Chris Evans, hit back at critics in a statement, saying: “Every time there’s been social advancement as we wake up, the American story, the human story is one of constant social awakening and growth and that’s what makes us good. There’s always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before. But those people die off like dinosaurs. I think the goal is to pay them no mind, march forward and embrace the growth that makes us human.”
