Breakout artist Sasha Gordon is gearing up for Haze, a new solo exhibition opening at David Zwirner next month. Staged at its 19th street Chelsea gallery, the showcase marks the artist’s first with Zwirner since the announcement of her co-representation with Matthew Brown Gallery, and will debut a new suite of paintings that push her exploration of form and lore.
Lush and luminous, Gordon’s compositions commonly feature the artist herself as a recurring figure slipping between identities and guises. Through sublime veils of oil in charged, electric hues, her works circle the psychological and corporeal dimensions, using her body as an avatar through which interior dramas and allegories of selfhood play out.
With Haze, Gordon turns her attention to chronological storytelling, piecing together the origin myths of her imaginative worlds. The artist’s oeuvre is one defined by technical prowess, paired with expressions of fantasy, humor and role-play to unsettle conventional notions of representation, offering scenes that tilt toward both the intimate and the uncanny.
“I saw Sasha Gordon’s work for the first time late last year at the ICA Miami and was floored by the power of those paintings. I felt that I was in the presence of an artist of our time and for our time, an entirely new voice, a painter who is pushing the genre into uncharted territory,” Zwirner said upon her representation in 2024. “I’m excited for our first show together next year, and I am especially pleased that I can collaborate with Matthew Brown, one of the most talented gallerists of his generation.”
Haze will be on view at David Zwirner from September 10 through October 18.
