In celebration of what would have been late rapper Nipsey Hussle’s 40th birthday, LA Metro is commemorating the South LA native.

In collaboration with the rapper’s estate, LA Metro Friday launched two limited edition TAP cards that pay tribute to the life and cultural impact of Nipsey Hussle on Los Angeles.

One of the card designs is named “Crenshaw & Slauson,” showing a black and white horizontal portrait of the rapper on the streets of Crenshaw. The photograph was taken by renowned hip-hop photographer Jonathan Mannion, LA Metro said.

Another special design is coined “Watts” as it shows Nipsey on a Metro bus.

There will be 12,000 of the special cards as they were expected to be available at ticket vending machines at certain Metro stations, including Hyde Park, Crenshaw, Compton, Hollywood/Vine and Expo/Crenshaw.

The Hyde Park station has been temporarily renamed as Nipsey Hussle Station through Aug. 31, LA Metro said.

“This partnership with his estate is a powerful example of how Metro is bridging transit, culture, and community to celebrate the enduring spirit of Los Angeles,” the department said in a statement.

But the limited edition cards may not be available for too long as long lines of people waited to buy them Friday morning.

Nipsey Hussle, whose legal name was Ermias Joseph Asghedom, died in March 2019 when he was shot and killed outside his clothing store. The Grammy-nominated musician was known as a passionate community advocate, pushing for gang prevention and empowering others through his platform.

As his death shocked the world and hip-hop communities, the rapper legacy has lived on as his family continued his philanthropic efforts through the Neighborhood Nip Foundation. S: NBC LA
