– We want decent mic-pres, and
– nice sounding plugins (if digital Mixer)
– Capable of 12 Stereo mix buses to invidual musicians
– Lots of inputs (42)
– Band is on IEM, Guitars, bass and keys are all digital (Axe Fx etc), Drums are mostly acoustic.
I used to run a small studio back in the days, so I am familiar with some technical things, but have not served multiple musicians a personal IEM mix before, this was more like a 1-3 person studio where I fed the monitors from an RME UFX.
In my other bands current rehearsal space I´ve setup a X32 with a Midas M32, routing from X32 USB -> Mac Mini Logic Pro X which runs in1-out1 in 2-out 2, etc, So that I can assign Waves and other plugins to the channels. Works ok with a relevant low amount of plugins per channel without much latency. But soundwise not perfect most due to the X32/M32 i guess, and has it limitations due to latency. It sounds much better on our live rig (LV1 Classic)
I thought about going different routes.
1. Digital mixing console, like A&H Avantis Solo + GX4816&Dx012 (about 10k) or Waves LV1 Classic with Stagegrid 4000 and Live+ Bundle (About 15k)
2. Audio interface and++ – not sure what in 2026…. And would the roundtrip latency be low enough for drummers and guitarist not noticing? (With plugins active in Logic Pro or Waves Superrack Performer)… Or do we need some kind of DSP offloading, like a Waves server with Soundgrid to get acceptable latency?
And about personal monitoring. We need 12 stereo IEM. I prefer Wired since wireless cousing a massive drop in audio quality (Anything below PSM1000 sounds like rubbish in my opinion). But also the wired ones like the P1 / p2 does not sound good at all.
So.. There is for example A&H ME-1, but I actually prefer iPad mixing. But we need something to control volume and amplify the IEMs on the invidual musicians (Which was why I thought of ME-1). But a complete ME-1 setup is also quite expensive with the ME-U and everything needed.
This is for rehearsal only, but with for example an LV1 setup, we could use the same mixer for our concerts creating the same enviroment and sound which is nice, but not a must.
So, what do you believe is the best solution for us?
